Interview preparation
Interviews are a skill, and skills are practised. The questions below are the ones that actually come up.
Behavioural questions
Structure answers as situation, task, action, result — weighted heavily toward action. Say what you did, not what the team did.
- 1Tell me about a time you disagreed with a technical decision.
- 2Describe a problem you could not solve alone. How did you get help?
- 3Tell me about a mistake that reached a user.
- 4Describe the last thing you taught yourself, and why.
- 5Why are you moving into this field now?
Technical questions
Reason out loud. "I do not know — here is how I would find out" scores better than a confident wrong answer, every single time.
- 1Walk me through what happens when a user reports "the site is down".
- 2A page loads but has no styling. How do you diagnose it?
- 3What is the difference between authentication and authorisation?
- 4Explain something from your portfolio project to someone non-technical.
- 5What would you do differently if you rebuilt that project today?
